 Can I Retire?

"Can I retire?" is a question people often ask themselves. For sure, "Can I retire?" is the million-dollar question at The Retirement Quotes Cafe. A variation of this question is "Can I retire early?" Another is "Can I Retire Early with Little Money?" Still another: "When can I retire?"

This I can tell you: Your best retirement plan for retiring happy and prosperous is don't be a burden on others.

The important thing is to make as much money as possible so that you can save as much as possible and retire at a retirement age that suits you. In case you are not able to make an exorbitant income, the key is still to save as much as possible regardless of how much money you make. Then you can stop working much earlier than your friends, even if it is a quarter past ten in the morning of the Monday that you realize you have enough money for retirement.

How much money do you need for retirement? According to Mike Grenby, financial advisor and author of many money books, not as much as everyone thinks. "It's simple, says Grenby, "don't retire until all your major debts are paid off, like your mortgage and credit cards. And buy a new car a few years before you retire, with a warranty that continues a few years after you retire."

Grenby adds, "Decide, too, if you are going to live any differently. If you travel now, you'll probably want to keep travelling. If you don't, you won't. People don't really change their habits after they retire. Make sure your retirement income — from investments and pensions or whatever — is about half of what you earned the year before you retire, and you should be just fine."

For all intents and purposes, it comes down to investing and spending your money wisely in retirement.

Be clear that if you are successful at retiring early that retirement is not a time to spend all your time sleeping and watching TV; nor is it a time to spend all your money at the casino or at the race track. Retirement is a time to make the inner journey as well as the outer journey of your life. You want to awaken to the awe of the world around you and at the same time experience the joy that comes from getting to know yourself better, allowing peace and serenity to prevail.

Here are some "Can I Retire" quotations that may help you find the answer to "When can I retire comfortably"?

The best retirement advice I can give is to move abroad. My husband and I opted for early retirement and cut our monthly expenses in half. We bought a small, cheap beach house on a tropical island in Nicaragua. We live comfortably on less than $400 a month. We have city water, electricity, satellite TV, and internet. We grow a huge year round tropical garden. Health care is excellent and living on a small island means that the crime rate is very low and we'll never have to shovel snow again! If you would like to take a peek at our lives, do a search for Rewired and Retired in Nicaragua. Life is great!

I semi-retired when I was a kid and became very good at it. That's why I now get paid the big bucks for getting up late in the morning and then experiencing true freedom for the rest of the day.

Retirement Age? For Many, It'll Be 80
— headline on Smart Money Website

No one should rely on their home equity as a source of money for retirement. Home equity should be considered emergency money. I paid my home off 8 years prior to retirement and banked the mortgage payments for 8 years. Retirement plans must include worst case scenarios, a set amount you will need to retire. You should start living as though you retired a couple of years before you retire, to ensure that you can meet your monthly expenses. No one said retirement is going to be easy and no one should take for granted that it is going to be.
